How to use your MouthMud: Don’t bother to wet your toothbrush – just scoop about ¼ teaspoon on and brush. Some people prefer to use a popsicle stick or other device to grab a dab and that is a choice as well. Brush as usual with a manual or electric toothbrush. Swallow to enjoy the benefits of the ingredients OR swish for an extended period and spit. Whatever your choice, do not rinse your mouth – let the benefits of the essential oils heal your body.
MouthMud’s Ingredients and Benefits:
- Baking soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) can help to remove stains and plaque build up. Its cleaning power also helps to reduce bad breath due to its alkalinity. MouthMud contains small quantities so the blend is suitable for sensitive teeth. Research indicates that baking soda's alkalizing effect can also reduce free radicals. As amazing as it is, straight baking soda used as a toothpaste over time can scrub off the precious enamel surface - a very small amount is in MouthMud so it is appropriate for sensitive teeth.
- Coconut oil gives a nice “mouthfeel” to the toothpaste and provides a good consistency to the mixture, but more importantly, unrefined organic coconut oil has strong antibacterial and antiviral properties that help keep the bacteria at bay.
- Calcium Bentonite Clay is an edible clay that is full of essential minerals our bodies crave and it helps our bodies get rid of toxins. In toothpaste, it also functions as a gentle abrasive and cleanser. As bacteria grow through the day by feeding on the sugars of food debris in your mouth, their wastes create an acidic environment, which eat away at tooth enamel, create halitosis, and can enflame gums. The alkalinity of bentonite clay balances that acid to improve oral health.
- Diatomaceous Earth (DE) has a high concentration of silica, as well fifteen other trace minerals that are all critical to humans. DE can also speed up the remineralizing process on teeth and, in a proper proportion, can gently polish the teeth. Other benefits of DE, such as detoxification, are widely published.
- Vortex (Structured) Water is a key ingredient to help make all of the ingredients work more efficiently. Clayton Nolte’s dynamic system returns water to its most elemental and natural state allowing better hydration and increased healing potential.
- Xylitol is a sweetening agent to make the toothpaste more yummy. Many holistic dentists recommend it specifically to prevent tooth decay due to its residual alkalizing effect in the mouth. Overacidic saliva can demineralize teeth and it is common to see chewing gums made with this ingredient to improve dental health. Xylitol is made from birch bark or corncobs. I choose to use non-GMO corncob sourced xylitol, which is more sustainable option. Dogs can have an adverse reaction to this ingredient so it is recommended you use the non-xylitol MouthMuds for your pet.
Advanced Essential Oil Blend in MouthMud:
- Cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum): A precious essential oil with antiseptic, antimicrobial, analgesic, circulation stimulant, and even aphrodisiac properties! It removes bad breath by disinfecting the oral cavity, heals oral infections, and alleviates toothache pain. Cardamom’s immune boosting properties and anti-infectious actions further support dental health.
- Cinnamon (Cinnamomum ceylanicum): The essential oil from the true bark – most cinnamon sold is not true cinnamon! This is a powerful purifier and enhances the action and activity of other oils to promote gum health and regeneration. Medicinally, cinnamon is used for its antifungal, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, and circulation boosting properties. It has been found that viruses, bacteria, and fungus cannot live in this oil and it is effective against 98% of all disease causing bacteria.
- Clove Bud (Eugenia carophyllata): Research indicates antibacterial, antimicrobial, antiseptic, antiviral, fungicidal, germicidal, antiparasitic, and stimulant properties. Clove bud is a gum-boosting powerhouse. A recent study showed this essential oil has a particular ability to inhibit the growth of mutant and wild strains of bacteria! Clove bud has been recognized as a powerful disinfectant and local anesthetic for hundreds of years in traditional Chinese medicine.
- Mastic (Pistacia lentiscus): Proven to be astringent, antibacterial, antifungal, and balsamic. Diosurides (an ancient physician, pharmacologist and botanist) stated that mastic “pulls the gums together” – just one note from a long history of oral care. Antioxidant, antifungal, antiseptic, and antibacterial benefits assist inflammations and freshens breath. Mastic oil assists the blood's first-line-of-defense by activating white blood cells (leukocytes) and the multinucleocytes. This helps to combat tartar buildup and gingivitis by increasing protection between the teeth and gums.
- Neem (Azadiracta indica): A staple in Ayurvedic medicine for ages, neem has powerful analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, fungicidal, miticidal, and circulation boosting benefits. This powerful oil can kill organisms that cause tooth decay and calcium buildup. There are just too many wonderful properties to list here.
- Oregano (Origanum vulgare): Proves to be a potent antibacterial, antiseptic, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral, antiparasitic, and anti-inflammatory agent. Oreganium vulgare, in particular, has been considered to be a “cure all” by scientific research. This oil can improve oral health and destroy bacteria, which lead to plaque buildup and gingivitis.
- Peppermint (Mentha piperita): The familiar aroma is known for both its warming and cooling characteristics. Not only is it a refreshing mental stimulant, peppermint is antiseptic, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antimicrobial, analgesic, and relieves bad breath. Not just good for gum tissue, it is a proven aid to digestion and has many, many whole body benefits.
- Rose Otto (Rosa damascene): An extraordinary oil with over 300 elements! Rose oil is said to raise the frequency of every cell and to bring balance to the whole body. It is bactericidal, analgesic, antiviral, and antiseptic; and rose assists to resolve mouth infections, gingivitis, and any inflammation. It improves circulation and rejuvenates the body’s tissues. Exotic, expensive, and worth every penny for its healing prowess.
- Tea Tree Oil (Malaleuca alternifolia): Relentless antimicrobial, antiviral, antiseptic, and antibacterial properties kill microorganisms involved in tooth decay and gum disease. A serious enemy for inflammation from gum disease, including gingivitis, and other dental plagues such as plaque! Tea tree is an immune stimulant and its Terpinen-4-ol can combat all three categories of infectious organisms (viruses, bacteria, and fungi).
- Thyme (Thymus zygus): An effective antimicrobial, antibacterial, antifungal, antiparasitic, antiseptic, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory essential oil. The high level of thymol has been chemically duplicated and used in commercial antiseptic mouthwashes, it is best to work with the plant’s medicine, not fake it! Thyme’s list of health benefits goes on to include circulation improvement (gum health and salivary response) and immune system enhancement.
What is NOT in MouthMud
Glycerin, an ingredient in most commercial toothpaste that forms a coating on the teeth PREVENTING remineralization! Why do most manufacturers use it? It makes the texture nice and pasty, and is sweet tasting. Glycerin is wonderful on the skin, NOT on the teeth!
Sodium Laurel Sulfate (SLS) is very common in toothpastes – even popular health food store brands! SLS creates a “desirable” foaming action because it is a detergent. It is very effective at dissolving grease off car engines! One of the main effects of sodium lauryl sulfate is to mimic the activity of the hormone estrogen leading to PMS, menopausal symptoms, breast cancer, and male infertility.
Fluoride is a standard ingredient in commercial toothpastes that is a by-product of aluminum processing and a common ingredient in pesticides. Yikes. Many people would agree that fluoride is NOT good for the body. Water Fluoridation Facts by Dr. Mercola is a good article for those who are new to this concept.
Flavors, fragrances, alcohol, and unpronounceables. These are not necessary and can be profoundly unhealthy. Do your own research and know what goes in your mouth!
NOTE: Although MouthMud was not created as a meal, it would cause no harm for a human to ingest a jar... The reason most commercial toothpaste instructions want you to rinse your mouth or supervise children while using, is because those products may not be harmless...
